Cat Litter Boxes: A Wholesale Buyer's Guide to Styles, Sizes and Materials

How to choose cat litter boxes for retail: open, semi-enclosed and enclosed styles, hooded and drawer designs, size and height, plastic versus stainless steel, and litter mats that complete the sale.

Litter boxes are one of the few pet products the customer uses every single day, which makes them a high-intent purchase: shoppers research, compare and buy carefully. For a retailer, that also makes assortment the whole game. This guide covers the decisions that matter - style, size, height, material and the accessories that turn a box into a complete litter set - using our own range of open, semi-enclosed, enclosed, drawer and stainless-steel designs.

Start With Style: Open, Semi-Enclosed, Enclosed

The first split is how much the box encloses. Open pans are the easiest for cats to accept and the easiest for owners to monitor, and they suit first-time cat owners and anxious cats. Semi-enclosed boxes add low walls that keep litter inside while staying airflow-friendly - the most popular volume format in our range, typically around 17-20 cm high. Fully enclosed and hooded designs with a door offer privacy and odor control, and they photograph best, but some cats refuse a box with only one exit. Stocking all three lets the customer choose by their cat rather than by the spec sheet.

The Format Details That Sell

Drawer and Slide-Out Designs

Drawer-type boxes solve the worst chore in cat ownership: full litter changes. Pull out the tray, dump it, slide it back - no lifting the whole box. These are heavier products (our drawer models run around 2.4 kg) and they sell to owners who have already had a basic pan. Position them as the upgrade step in your range, not the entry product.

Multi-Tier and Furniture-Style Boxes

Three-tier and furniture-style boxes are the premium tier. They double as an entry step or a hiding place in a small apartment, which is exactly why they command higher prices. Our taller units stand around 41 cm high and weigh roughly 2-2.6 kg depending on shell material. These need floor space in the shop to demonstrate - a photo alone undersells them.

Size and Height: Get the Numbers Right

Rule of thumb: the box should be about one and a half times the length of the cat, nose to tail base. In practice, our range spans roughly 39 cm to 60.5 cm in length, with most volume sellers in the 47-60 cm band. Height matters as much as footprint - a box that is too shallow gets litter kicked over the edge, while a deep one is hard for kittens and senior cats to step into. Semi-enclosed models around 20-28 cm high cover most adult cats; keep at least one low-entry option for older animals.

Plastic or Stainless Steel?

PP plastic is the workhorse: light, impact-resistant, inexpensive to mold into any shape, and available in colors. Stainless-steel pans are the premium answer to two complaints plastic cannot fully solve - lingering odor and scratching over time. Hybrid designs that pair a steel pan with a PP shell give the durability benefit with the shape flexibility of plastic, and our three-tier boxes are available in both all-PP and PP-with-steel versions for exactly this reason. For a range, treat steel as the step-up SKU rather than the volume line.

The Accessories That Complete the Sale

Litter mats are the highest-value add-on in this category: they catch tracked litter at the exit, and customers buy them at the same moment as the box. A TPR mat with a textured surface is the standard format - ours is 40x30 cm at 340 g and packs 50 pieces per box, which makes it an easy second-line item. Scoops, liners and deodorizer refills follow the same logic: sell the box, then stock everything the owner needs to live with it.

Building a Litter Range

A complete litter program is usually five slots: one open pan for kittens and first-time owners, one semi-enclosed volume seller in two or three sizes, one enclosed or hooded design for odor-conscious households, one drawer or furniture-style upgrade, and one stainless-steel option for the premium end. Add the mat and you have a set that covers entry through premium without a second supplier. Because all of these share PP tooling, mixed-category cartons are practical for a first order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size litter box should I stock first?

Start with a semi-enclosed box in the 50-60 cm length band, around 20 cm high - it fits most adult cats and sells year-round. Add an open pan as the low-entry option and a larger enclosed model for big cats and multi-cat homes.

Are stainless-steel litter boxes worth the price difference?

For customers who have already replaced a scratched plastic pan, yes: steel resists scratches and does not hold odor the way plastic can. It is a step-up SKU rather than a volume line, so stock it in one or two sizes.

Can litter boxes be customized for our market?

Yes. Color, branding on the shell, packaging and carton configuration can be adapted on existing molds, which keeps tooling costs down. Send your requirement to our sales team for an OEM/ODM quote.
